Ricky Thompson

Ricky Daryl Thompson, of Orem, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023. He was 65 years old. Ricky was born January 13th, 1958, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Daryl and Diane Thompson.

Ricky spent his childhood in Missoula, Montana. He excelled in many sports and graduated from Hellgate High School in 1977. A lifelong lover of nature and the outdoors, he earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1976. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hamburg, Germany, where he developed a deep love of the German people and German culture. After returning from his mission, Ricky enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1980. He served for eight years in Electronic Security Command, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. After leaving the military, Ricky’s love of computers brought him to Utah to work for WordPerfect.

Ricky loved rockets and was a member of the Utah Rocket Club. He loved airplanes; he always had an app or scanner to track flights and would bring his kids to aviation museums and air shows. He loved trains and model trains. He also loved genealogy, devoting most of his free time to researching family history. Above all else, Ricky loved his family.

Ricky is survived by his mother, Diane Thompson; his brothers, Randy (Marybeth) Thompson, Robb Thompson, and Rex (Cami) Thompson; his children, Barret McCullough, Peter (Vicki) Thompson, James (Ashley) Thompson, Bronte (Jake) Erickson, and John (Lillibette) Thompson, and 11 grandchildren. Ricky is preceded in death by his father, Daryl, and brother Rory Thompson.

A viewing for the family will be held at Sundberg Olpin Mortuary on Friday, February 10th, from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11th, 2023, at 12:00 pm at the Geneva Heights Chapel located at 590 N. 900 W. Orem, Utah 84057. Military rites will be performed by the American Legion. A viewing for friends and family will take place, prior to the service, from 10:30 -11:30 am, on Saturday.
