Our dear, sweet 94 year old mom passed away early Saturday morning August 20, 2016. Wilma Young Barrett was born August 12, 1922 in Chester, Utah to Arnold Leroy and Belle Cloward Young. Her extreme enthusiasm for life kept her fighting to the end. She married Ray Giles "Bud" Barrett on February 17, 1939 and spent the next 76 years together. Their love and companionship were unmatched, they were never apart.
From a very early age Mom took care of everyone's kids. Over the years there have been countless people that have called her "Mom" and "Grandma". Mom fed and clothed many kids over the years from her foster children to any others that didn't have a place to live or were in need of her care. When mentioned to her that "All of those people sure were lucky to have you!" Her reply was "No, I'm the blessed one for having them in my life". She was a champion to the underdog, always giving of her time and energy. Wilma's greatest passion was cooking for her family and the world. Mom could take 20 bucks and feed an army and still have change left over.
She ran the toy department in Taylors Department Store for years. She helped setup the annual Provo Thanksgiving parades. She also cooked for the Utah County Jail, and Geneva Elementary.
Her passion for life was remarkable. With lifelong health issues she still managed to be a gifted athlete. She was very competitive. Whether it was golfing, bowling, fishing, or even playing cards, she made it a battle. She loved the old Las Vegas, Mom and Dad went to every show and saw all of the old entertainers. They were also active members of the original Club Radar which later became the Riverside Country Club.
The family cabin at Strawberry Reservoir was our second home. We spent nearly every weekend there fishing and hunting. Moms fish preparation and cutlery skills lead everyone within miles to bring their catch to her. The feasts she put on were legendary, once again feeding everyone that passed by.
She was a truly spiritual person. She had a very special and private relationship with God. She would lay her hands on you and say a silent prayer and you could just feel the love and healing. Ten minutes later she could turn around and take all of your money in a game of poker with the best poker face in history.
Mom will really be missed. She joins our dad and many other family members in heaven. She leaves behind her daughter Bonnie (Jim) LeVitre, son Danny (Jane) Barrett, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grand children.
A private family memorial will be held for Mom and Dad at a later date. Mom didn't want a funeral, she wanted a wake. So everyone turn up the music, throw a few back and enjoy life every single second that you're here.
A very special thanks to her granddaughter Corrine Beach and her sons for living with her and caring for her until the end. We would also like to thank excellent hospice companies, Symbii and Sunrise for the care they provided to Mom and Dad over the past several years.
