William C. Stacey passed away quietly in his home on Monday, February 5, 2018, after a short illness. His life for most of his 98 years was devoted to serving others, teaching the gospel, and bearing witness of the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed by friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by his warm spirit and generous heart.
Bill was born in Evanston, Wyoming, on December 17, 1919, the second child of Frederick and Christina (Cox) Stacey. Within a few years, they moved to Woodruff, Utah, where Fred went into partnership with his brother-in-law William Cox to buy a large ranch a mile south of Woodruff. On that ranch, they raised their six sons and one daughter.
Service was the hallmark of Bill’s life. He served a mission from 1940 to 1942 in the North Central States Mission, including Minnesota and Southern Canada. After being released, he married his sweetheart Velma Dickson of Woodruff and applied for service in the US Air Force, beginning training in the spring of 1943. After World War II, he devoted his life to family and to God, serving in many leadership positions throughout his life.
As a mechanical engineer, Bill worked for Utah Power and Light Company, Geneva Steel, and BYU, where he continued as a volunteer until January of 2018. Retiring in 1985, he served three missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his wife Velma: two missions to the Philippines Baguio Mission and one to the Australia Melbourne Mission. He continued teaching and serving others to the last week of his life.
Bill is the father of seven children: Janet (Lee Grant) Porter of Orem, Utah; Dennis W. (Delta) Stacey of Russell, Ohio; Darrell R. (Loretta) Stacey of Orem, Utah, (currently serving in the Bismark, North Dakota mission); Yvonne (David) Peterson of Orem, Utah; Ann (Scott) Crowley of Orem, Utah; Rulon F. (Linda) Stacey of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Newell D. (Susan) Stacey of Warrenton, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 1 p.m.in the LDS Sharon 5th Ward Chapel located at 545 South 800 East in Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery in Provo, Utah. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the William C. and Velma D. Stacey Scholarship Fund at BYU, 1450 N University Avenue, Provo, Utah. This is a general scholarship fund for Filipino students.
