William Pippin Newman, 93, of Provo, Utah, passed away Tuesday, July 27th. He was born March 8, 1928, in Greenville, Mississippi to Robinson Vernon Newman and Annie Laura Newman. He married Bess Rogers Small on February 4, 1950 in Greenwood, Mississippi.
Bill attended the University of Virginia and Mississippi State University. He also enlisted in the Army and was a paratrooper. He was the consummate salesman and worked in the funeral business for many years. He was an avid gardener and loved to attend the sporting events of his grandchildren. He loved to bar-b-que and was known for his smoked turkey and chicken. Bill served as a Bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife, Bess, served a full- time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chinle, Arizona. They served as temple workers in the Houston and Dallas temples. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Newman Nixon (Clair Nixon) of Provo, Utah; 10 grandchildren, Julie Daley (Neal), Will Nixon (Kelly), Elizabeth Harmer (Larry), John Nixon (Sheree), Michael Nixon (Julia), David Nixon (Jessie), Catherine Pyfer (Bryan), Rachel Bills (Craig), Emily Hill (Taysom) and Timothy Nixon (Micah) and 34 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bess Rogers Newman and his brother Robinson Vernon Newman II.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 2, 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 303 West 3700 North, Provo, Utah at 11:00 am. A viewing for friends and family will be held just prior to the service from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the church. Burial will be in the Orem City cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or The Humanitarian Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
