Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, mentor, and friend Steven Karl Mitchell, 81, of Orem, Utah passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 4th, 2021.
He was born September 6, 1940 in Provo, Utah to Karl Jefferson and MaryBeth Clark Mitchell. He married Alma Farmer Mitchell on June 28, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 52 years before she passed away on April 15, 2015. Later he married Joanne Power on May 17, 2017 in the Provo Temple.
Steve was an amazing husband and father, who dedicated his life to serving his family, friends, and countless others. He was a confidante to many, approachable, non-judgmental, caring, and patient, a true friend. He was a devoted fan of BYU basketball and football and looked forward to every game as a chance to be with his sons, grandsons, and friends. He loved hunting, fishing, and playing games, with a special knack for Backgammon. He had a love for his ancestors and spent countless hours researching his genealogy.
Steve was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities throughout the years. His early missionary service in the Western States Mission changed his life, and he has always made missionary work a priority. He enjoyed many cherished experiences sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ that he knew, loved, and lived. He spent six years serving as a senior missionary with Alma, including two years as Director of the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial Visitors Center in Sharon, Vermont.
Steve was an entrepreneur at heart from a very young age. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and started many successful businesses throughout his life. Along with Alma, Steve won the National Small Business of the Year award in 1975 and several other awards for his business accomplishments. Steve and Alma founded American Crafts which remains in the family today.
Steve is survived by his spouse, Joanne Power Mitchell, his eight children MaryLyn (Larry) Lawrence, Jacquelyn (Bryan) Barney, RuthAnn (Kam) Jarman, Sherri (Laren) Winkel, Jeffrey (Amy) Mitchell, Shauna (Mark) Hunt, David (Michelle) Mitchell, and Wayne (Britt) Mitchell; 34 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; his siblings Robert (Susan) Mitchell, Clark (Evelyn) Mitchell, Thomas (Lynette) Mitchell, and JoAnn (Henry) Zaremba. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma, his sister, Marilee (Alvin) and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 11:00 am in the Orchard LDS Church Building located at 670 East 800 North in Orem. A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sundberg Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem, and on Saturday morning just prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
