Shirlene R. Hindmarsh

May 3, 1943 — December 31, 2024

Provo

Shirlene Rasmussen Hindmarsh was born, May 3, 1943, in Provo, Utah, to Wanda Teeples and Mark Harris Rasmussen. Shirlene was their third child.

She grew up in the Provo neighborhood on 300 West built by her dad and the Rasmussen Construction Company. She attended Grandview Elementary School, Dixon Jr. High School, and graduated from Provo High School. Shirlene also attended Brigham Young University.

Shirlene was born with an independent spirit. As a young girl, she rode horses, befriended underdogs, and took solo summertime bus trips to Holden, Utah, to visit her aunt Venez and cousin Brenda.

Shirlene and Ted Collins Hindmarsh were high school sweethearts and married on May 20, 1960. During their early years of marriage, Shirlene was one of the fastest seamstresses at Barbizon Fabrics.

Together, they raised their five children in Provo and often took them on outdoor adventures. Hiking to the top of Mount Timpanogos was an annual family event. They made lifelong friends both in the old Park Ward and Grandview neighborhoods.

She and Ted were a team. Shirlene supported him through years of schooling, scout mastering, church service, and his 40-year career at BYU.

After her youngest child was in school, Shirlene began a BYU career of her own as a student advisor in the former College of Health and Human Performance. She loved the students, gained friends and associates, and retired after 24 years.

Shirlene had an innate ability to create beauty and order. Her family will remember her as their counselor, seamstress extraordinaire, landscaper, immaculate gardener, food preserver, hairdresser, and shopper. Her beautiful hands-crafted clothing, remodeled furniture and rooms, and made the best brownies, caramels, and pumpkin pie.

Shirlene loves and honors family. We consider her the glue that kept her large immediate and extended family members connected. She remembered birthdays, supported events, and sacrificed much. Though she often reminded us that families are complicated, she loved every member.

Shirlene cultivated an abundant faith in God. She loved to serve and give. She was honored to serve with Ted as a Nauvoo Temple missionary in 2011, and she cherished her Wednesday Provo Temple coordinator shifts.

When Ted passed away in 2020, Shirlene sold the family home. She enlisted the help of her cousin and oversaw the complete renovation of her new place. She loved her time in the Grandview Farm neighborhood and appreciated the companionship and care of her many friends and neighbors, both old and new.

Shirlene was ready and excited to be with her sweetheart again and joined him in heaven on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. She and her family are grateful for Dr. Mark Ott and the gentle care from Kristie Robinette and Barbara MacArthur, her iCare hospice nurses.

Shirlene leaves her children— Shaunna (James) George, Provo; Teri (Rich) Stucky, Heber; Todd Hindmarsh, Provo; Scott (Simone) Hindmarsh, Orem; and Tom (Greta) Hindmarsh, Vineyard. Also, Sondra Mills (sister), Don Rasmussen (brother), Dale Rasmussen (brother), Ross Quilter (stepbrother), Kerri Hundley (stepsister), Mary Barrus (sister-in-law), 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and a large posterity who will cherish her always.
