Richard “Cub” William Carson, age 94, passed away on 20 June 2022, in Orem, Utah. He was born August 19, 1927, to Richard Wesley Carson and Viola Cherry, in Gallup, New Mexico. He married Coy Loree Woodward on November 7, 1948, in Gallup. They were sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple on May 22, 1958. She preceded him in death on November 22, 2014.
Cub spent much of his youth on the Navajo Reservation, where his father ran several trading posts. There he learned to speak the Navajo language. He attended Gallup High School until being drafted into the US Army during his senior year and served in the occupation forces in Japan and the Philippines. Upon returning home to St. Michaels, Arizona he worked in the Ft. Defiance Trading Post. This was when he met Coy. They were blessed with four daughters, Dianne, Kathy, Debbie and Beth.
They spent their early family years on the Navajo Reservation; Cub worked at Ft. Defiance Trading in Arizona (1948-1953) and the Naschitti Trading Post in New Mexico (1953-1958). They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1957, while at Naschitti. This was a decision they were committed to, in spite of family opposition, which precipitated their move to Gallup in 1958, where Cub purchased his own trading post on the old Zuni Road. Carson Trading Post provided well for their growing family for the next 30 years. In the 1980’s he sold the store, worked as a Real Estate agent for a time and then eventually, became an agent for Mass Mutual Life Insurance. He retired in 2004 and as Coy’s health began to fail, they moved to Orem Utah to be near their daughter.
Cub was a happy man and well-loved wherever he went. He loved his family, his country and his faith. Service was a way of life for Cub whether in the trading post, the church or as the local PTA President in the elementary school. His daughters have wonderful memories of his love for fun, adventure and whole-hearted service. He was a devoted, engaged father and husband.
Cub is survived by three daughters, Patricia Dianne (Legrand) Slade of Star, Idaho, Kathryn Jane Carson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Deborah Lynn (Norman) Taylor of Orem, Utah, 24 grandchildren, 90 Great-grandchildren and 2 GG-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Coy, his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Saline, his parents, one great-granddaughter, Olivia Kate Slade, 2 brothers, Raymond David (Dib) and James Bernard Carson and his sister, Donna Jean Hendrickson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Windsor 3rd Ward Meetinghouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1405 N Main Street, Orem, Utah. The funeral will be preceded by a 9:30-10:30 a.m. viewing. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem, Utah.
