Our loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Penny Nelson, of American Fork, passed away on May 20, 2017. Penny was born at Seattle, Washington, on January 27, 1939, to Benjamin Franklin and Alberta Nadiene Merrifield Surber (Peggy).
She married William Stewart Nelson on April 26, 1958, and they were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on January 4, 1964.
Penny was active in the LDS church and was dedicated to the many positions she held. She served in the Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh mission during 2009-2010.
Some of her favorite things were traveling, meeting new people, the symphony, plays, and good food! She was always serving others and treated everyone like family. She often spent her time caring for those who were sick or in need.
She was known for her greeting cards, gifts, smile, hugs, and mad card skills! You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen Grandma dance. She was adventurous and would try most anything once, sometimes two or three times to get it right.
Penny is survived by her stepfather Lloyd Deffenbaugh, children, Matt (Nicole) Nelson, Heidi Nelson (Cory Donaldson), Vanessa (Frank) Weatherly, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, and a sister-in-law.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. in the LDS Chapel located at 396 North 1100 East in American Fork, Utah. Viewings will be held on Wednesday, May 24, from 7-9 p.m. at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State in Orem and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the LDS humanitarian or general mission fund.
