Paul Hyde

Paul Nolan Hyde, 79, completed his mortal mission and returned to his Heavenly Home on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Born July 16, 1942, in Pomona, California to Nolan LeGrande Hyde and Pauline Estella Mead (Gaskill), Paul dedicated his life to bringing the light and knowledge of the restored gospel to all he came in contact with.

His service in the United States Air Force brought him to Duluth, Minnesota where he met his eternal companion, Patricia Lorraine Holmberg. After serving as an LDS missionary in the Southeast Mexico Mission, he returned to Duluth and proposed to Patricia. They were married for time and eternity on February 11, 1967, in the St. George Utah Temple.

While Paul’s family grew, he increased his knowledge through his studies at Brigham Young University and Purdue University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and English, a Master’s Degree in English Language and Linguistics, and a Doctorate in Philosophy with an emphasis in linguistics. A voracious reader, he found special meaning in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. His prolific writings included essays, dissertations, fictional works, his autobiography, and commentaries on the scriptures.

During his 35 years as an instructor and director with the Church Educational System for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, his cheerful disposition, command of language, and love of and delight in the scriptures were instrumental in his desire to bless the lives of every soul with truth. No matter how many times he studied and taught from the scriptures, he always returned to earnestly search for more truth, knowledge, and enlightenment. His great love for the gospel, the Savior, and his Heavenly Parents was only equaled by his love for his family.

Paul also served as a Bishop in his local ward from 2003 to 2008, served as a church service missionary coordinator from 2010 to 2012, and in Branch Presidencies at the Provo Missionary Training Center from 2013 to 2017.  He was a temple worker at various times in his life having served at three different temples, and was serving at the Provo Utah Temple up until the time of his death.

He also influenced and blessed the lives of countless others through many years of service and leadership in the Boy Scouts of America, having served as Scoutmaster, Scout Camp Director, Wood Badge trainer, and in other various assignments.  Paul received the Silver Beaver Award in 1992 in recognition of his exceptional character and distinguished service.

He found great joy and satisfaction in sharing his love of music through his abilities as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He sang and recorded music with his children and was an active participant in his ward choir.

Paul is survived by his eternal companion, Patricia, and 7 children: Rebecca Gonzales (Victor), Jennifer Nakai (Andy), Christopher Hyde (Tammy), David Hyde (Deborah), Melissa Tyson (Jeff), Emily Thompson (Benjamin) and Dara Card (Jeremy),  33 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judy Cheesebrough (Ray).

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 9, 2021, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel located at 135 East 2000 South in Orem, Utah at 11:00 am. A viewing for friends and family will be held Sunday, August 8, 2021, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary at 495 South State Street in Orem, and again the day of the funeral from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the church. Burial will be at the Utah Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park in Bluffdale.
