NORMA CROWTHER SMEAD

1927-2016

On January 25, 2016 Norma Mae Crowther Smead, 88, graduated from this life surrounded by her loving family. Norma was born on Memorial Day, May 30, 1927 to George Lester and Elfie Lucille Bjorn Crowther in Salt Lake City. After graduating from South High School she attended the University of Utah, and completed her studies in fashion illustration at the Jean Turner School of Art/San Francisco Art Center. Norma worked as an advertising artist and promotions manager for the JC Penney Company in Salt Lake City. She was devoted to the gospel of Jesus Christ and filled an honorable mission to the Northern California Mission. On July 10, 1953, she married the love of her life, Robert Sidney Smead in the Salt Lake Temple. Her life was filled with adventure, whether it was in California, Virginia, Great Britain, and once again, in Utah. She was devoted to serving her Father in Heaven in any capacity, caring for each individual as well as teaching and leadership positions. Our Mother was a woman who saw the world awash with beauty and shared that with our family and others. She was a rare combination of creativity and organization - from writing poetry and creating Monet-like gardens to planning great events. She created magical moments with her laughter and her vivid imagination (Goof-off days, anyone?). Mother was the keeper of family stories and family history. She was known as a loyal and true friend. Mom just loved life! Our mother's life was a reflection of her deep and abiding testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and her love of God and family. Norma is survived by her children Robert (Gloria), Katherine (David) Haimson, Shauna (Robert) Mundinger, Cynthia (Scott) Gardner, 9 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at on Friday, January 29 at 11am at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem Utah. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn in Salt Lake City. The family expresses appreciation to Wendy Bayless, Brighton Hospice, and the staff at Beehive Home-Provo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LDS Humanitarian Aid or the General Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
