Nina Christensen

October 31, 1939 — January 4, 2015

Springville, UT-Nina Marie Rex Christensen, 75, died January 4, 2015, after a lingering struggle with congestive heart failure and related complications. She was born October 31, 1939, in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, to Robert Raymond Rex and Pearl Teenie Bullock. Randolph, Rich County, Utah, was her childhood home where she enjoyed the life of an outdoor-oriented, ranching family. Her early life involved trips to the beautiful turquoise-blue Bear Lake, delivering newspapers on horseback (even in below-zero temperatures during harsh winters), dancing, seminary, and helping her mother as the oldest daughter of eleven children. Nina attended Brigham Young University where she met and married her fellow bandsman, John Lawrence Christensen, in the Logan Utah Temple on December 18, 1959. In May of 1962, the family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where her husband began a 20-year career in the United States Air Force. They subsequently lived in College Station, Texas; Honolulu, Hawaii; Fredericksburg, Virginia; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Hampton, Virginia. After her husband retired, they returned to Orem, Utah, in 1982 where they lived for 26 years. During that time she and her husband served a four-year LDS Church service mission in the Salt Lake Family History Mission. In March of 2008 they moved to Mesquite, Nevada, for her health, the warm climate, and friendships there. In December, 2014, they moved back to Springville, Utah, where she could receive full-time health care from her long term doctor. She gave birth to nine children, and added another "foster child" along the way. While she served in many Church callings throughout her life; she was fully dedicated to the raising of those children, and they honor her today for her inspiring legacy of faith, courage, love, kindness, happiness, patience, hard work, and endurance. Survivors include her children, John Christensen, Jr (KayLyn), David Christensen, Debbie Jacobsen (Russ), Becky Gray, Lisa Cook (Tom), Lara Whiting (Troy), Susan Dunn (Josh), Jenny Christensen, Robert Christensen (Lynzie), and Kris Savage (Steve); four brothers and four sisters, Ronald Dee Rex (Sharon), Douglas Rex (Earlene), Steven Rex (Sherilyn), Darlene Wightman (David), Bettie Armstrong (Jim), Curtis Rex (Diane), Charmaine Kearl (Kerry), and Julie Allan (Brad); 29 grandchildren (with one pending); and 8 great-grandchildren (with two more pending). She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Norman Dale Rex (Janet), and Robert Alan Rex (Patricia). Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning, January 9, 2015, at the LDS Stake Center, 450 South 100 West, Orem, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held twice: Once at the Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home, 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah, on Thursday evening, January 8, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again at the LDS Stake Center at 9:30 a.m. just prior to the funeral services. The Family Prayer will be given at 10:45 a.m. A graveside service and burial will take place an hour after the funeral services at the Utah Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Bluffdale, Utah (17111 South Camp Williams Road, State Highway 68 - also known as Redwood Road). Drive North from Saratoga Springs, and the Cemetery is just North of Camp Williams. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to her doctors, to the staff at The Peaks Care and Rehab Center, and to the ICU staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for their loving, tender care of Nina during her health challenges, especially during the last week of her life; and to her many loved ones and friends everywhere who have offered such wonderful words of love and support.
