Richfield

On August 7, 2024, Newell Baker Ostler passed away in Richfield, Utah. He was 94.

Newell was born in Ogden, Utah, on July 30, 1930, to Stephen and Pearl (Baker) Ostler. He grew up on the family ranch in Morgan County, Utah, where he learned to herd cattle and sheep, and came to love the great outdoors.

Newell served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, assigned to Alaska where he trained officers to ski. He later served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Minnesota and Winnipeg, Canada. In 1957 he married Rhea Hatch in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three sons, Garth, Farrin and Duane.

Newell obtained his bachelor's degree from Eastern Washington University and taught high school woodshop for two years in Burley, Idaho. After that, he built a house in Rupert and another in Orem. In later years he became a truck driver and criss-crossed the country, traveling through or delivering loads in all but one of the continental states. In later life, he suffered from a number of health challenges.

Newell is survived by his sons Garth (Linda), Farrin (Yuvonne) and Duane (Kym), eight grandchildren–Erica, Bryce, April (Jarred Wade), Lindon, Jasmine (Brett Bishop), Chloe, Talmage and Mckay–and six great-grandchildren–Lucas Carlson, Graham Anderson, Joshua, Reya and Ellie Wade, and Milo Bishop. He was preceded in death by his wife Rhea Ostler (2006), brothers Lynn (2018), Stephen (1984), and Eugene (2002), sisters Louise (2017), Jacquelyn (1923), Marjorie (2021) and his twin sister Janet (1930), and grandchildren Jeanie (2015) and Korrey (2022).
