Michelene “Mikey” Harrigan, 66, of Orem, Utah, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, July 31, 2018. She was born July 2, 1952 in Evanston, Illinois to William Timothy Harrigan and Eileen Barger Harrigan.
Mikey loved learning and took college classes throughout her life. She attended Lutheran Bible school, pursued a degree in nursing and went back to school through the Pathways program where she was just one class away from a Family History certificate at BYU Idaho.
Mikey spent her life caring for others. First working in hospitals and especially with the elderly, Mikey had a knack for connecting with people and enabling them to remain in their own home. She was truly interested in each person no matter who they were. Many of her own caregivers count her as a true friend.
Mikey was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She continually looked for ways she could serve. Even after developing severe arthritis, she loved crocheting blankets, warm hats and scarves and giving them to the homeless in downtown Chicago.
Mikey is survived by 2 sisters and a brother: Debbie (Bob) Reid, Daniel (Alice) Harrigan and Karen (Richard) Nordgren, Aunt Rena Shield, a niece, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister Patricia (David) Hofstatter and parents.
Although Mikey wasn’t blessed with a posterity, she loved others’ children as her own. For the past 12 years, Mikey had lived as a part of the Mike & Lori Peterson family with children David, CJ, Matt (Savannah), Jessica (Fabricio) Sant’Anna & baby Emma, Amanda (Derek) Winstanley, Emily, Alyssa, Zach & Kyle.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Tuesday, prior to the services. Burial will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, September 16 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2035 N Windsor Drive, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60004.
In lieu of flowers, Mikey requested donations be made to support the homeless.
