June Mercedes Collett Bjarnson, age 93 of Provo, went peacefully to join the Heavenly choir and orchestra on April 16, 2018. She was born March 7, 1925 to John Thomas Collett and Junietta Josephine McCarthy Collett. She married Lewis De Bjarnson on April 17, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS temple. He preceded her in death June 4, 1989. Mercedes attended school in Springville where she lived most of her childhood. She graduated from Springville High School in 1943.
Mercedes was a mother and homemaker for many years living in Payson, Utah. She raised her children to love the Lord and cherish the gospel. She loved to sing and play the violin; she performed in several choirs, was a member of the Opera Guild and sang solos in church and for many other organizations. She enjoyed doing genealogy, extraction and indexing. Mercedes served in the Provo Temple for many years. She sewed all her children’s clothing, made quilts and taught her sons and daughters how to cook, clean and be a good neighbor. Mercedes shared her testimony of the gospel and her love for the Savior and Heavenly Father all her life. She was an example to all.
Mercedes is survived by six of her children: Steven Leon Bjarnson of Provo, Larry Douglas (Diane) Bjarnson of Provo, Lynette (Thomas) Mitchell of Provo, Eric Lewis (Chris) Bjarnson of Colton, OR, James Michael (Dawn) Bjarnson of Taylorsville, and Kiplyn (Guy) Ferrell of Saratoga Springs. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Mercedes is preceded in death by two sons John David and Raleigh De Bjarnson, her parents, two brothers, Roger and John L. Collett, her sister Colleen Collett, and a grandson, T Levi Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Edgemont 10th Ward LDS Chapel located at 345 East 4525 North, Provo, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held on Friday April 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State Street Orem and on Saturday one hour prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Provo City Cemetery following the service.
