Melvin Mabey

Melvin Pack Mabey of Orem, Utah died on March 7, 2016 of complications from adult onset diabetes. He was born in Bountiful, Utah on May 10, 1923, the son of David and Nellie Pack Mabey. He lived in Bountiful until his graduation from Davis High School. He then attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, graduating from the latter with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in accounting and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Political Science. In 1953 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Oxford, University in England where he received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). He returned to Brigham Young University (B.Y.U.) in 1955 and taught in the Political Science Department until 1984. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in four mission fields, Czechoslovakia, Capetown (South Africa), Namibia (Africa), and Prague (Czech Republic). The latter three of these missions were served with his wife, June. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving as an Officer in the Army Air Corp. As a professor at B.Y.U. he was a specialist in British, Middle East and Eastern European politics and history. He was twice invited back to Oxford University and was made a Senior Associate Member of St. Anthony's College. He is survived by his wife, June, with whom he was sealed in the Oakland temple on June 3, 1966. His first wife, Janet Anderson, and a daughter Rebecca Ann preceded him in death. He is also survived by the following children: Douglas (Debbie) Martin; Laurie (Philip) Broadbent (currently serving an L.D.S. mission in Brazil); Tanya (Arnold) Hernandez of Cumming, GA; Lynne (Chuck) Lockhart of Pocatello, ID; David (Linda) Mabey of Shelton, WA; Paul (Jennifer) Mabey of Amanda Park, WA; Elizabeth (Cliff) Lark of Riverton, UT; Mark (Mary) Mabey of Bonanza, OR; Richard Mabey of Provo, UT; Eric (Linda) Mabey of Provo, UT; Stephen (Tanya) Mabey of Spring City, UT; 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. A funeral will be held at Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home, 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah at 12 noon on Friday, March 11, 2016. Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:45am prior to the services. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Riverton, UT.
