Mary Porter

March 1, 1922 — October 28, 2014

Mary Lucille Treanor was born at home near Kendrick, Oklahoma on the 11th of March, 1922. She was the 7th child of John Steve Treanor and Mary Elizabeth Linthicum. She was a farm girl and learned how to work hard by helping out both in the house and in the fields. When she was four years old her mother died giving birth to the 9th child of the family. Her father later married Bessie Sexton who went on to have 7 children, for a total of 16 children. Her family moved to California when she was a teenager and Mary graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1941. She married William Earl Porter on November 19, 1941 in San Luis Obispo, California. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on April 22, 1943. Mary and Bill had four children: William Edward (Janet), Donald Gene (Diane), Peggy Lee (Kenneth Sherratt), and Thomas Neil (Debbie). They also had 19 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson and one great grandson. During WW II, she worked at the shipyards in Portland, Oregon while Bill was serving overseas. Later Mary worked for many years for Sears Roebuck stores. She was a valiant servant and held many callings in the church including cub scout leader, primary teacher, ward librarian, Young Women president, stake Young Women board, and Relief Society presidency member. She spent time and energy working on family history and served with her husband in the Oakland Temple. Bill found his career in the US Army and, as his wife, she followed him all over the world. She lived in Oklahoma, California, Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Hawaii, Alabama, Germany, and Japan. She was an immaculate housekeeper and enjoyed fixing up her home and making it a welcoming place for family and friends. She and Bill retired and eventually settled in Spanish Fork, Utah. He died on November 28th, 2003 and Mary remained in her home as long as she could. Her mental decline finally forced her to move to Lake Ridge Assisted Living in Orem, Utah where she died on October 26th, 2014 at the age of 92. Mary was the world's best wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her family is so grateful that she has left pain and confusion behind. We celebrate her life and look forward to being reunited with her. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State Street Orem, Utah. Viewing will be from 9:45am to 10:45am with services starting at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
