Marian Mangelson

March 12, 1937 — July 3, 2022

Orem, Utah

Marian Swan Mangelson passed away early on July 3, 2022 at the age of 85 surrounded by her husband and several members of her family after enduring the challenges of many health issues.  She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and person.  These titles do not do justice to the incredible woman she was.  Marian was born on March 12, 1937 in Murray, UT.  Throughout her life, she improved the lives of all those around her.  On September 1, 1961, she married the love of her life – Nolan Mangelson.  After meeting him when he was an actor in “Guys and Dolls”, their cat and mouse courtship began.  That led to a life of love and devotion to family.  Their 8 children, 35 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren are living testaments to that love.

Marian always focused on the needs of her family and friends before herself.  Even in her later years when she was in constant pain, you would feel the love she had for her entire family.  In September of 2019, she fulfilled a dream of taking all her children and their significant others on an Alaskan Cruise.  Even with failing health, she wanted to be sure her family was together and had an amazing experience that they would remember together forever.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Marian helped others find Christ and the joy of eternal families. She sent her 3 sons on missions, served a senior mission with Nolan in the Tucson, AZ mission, and sent 3 children to Israel to learn more about our Savior and walk in his footsteps.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father, a sister, and aunts, uncles and family members that cherished and loved her.  We are sure they were waiting for her in heaven to welcome her home.  She is survived by her loving husband Nolan Mangelson, her 8 children and their significant others – Scott Mangelson (Heidi Bamburg), Gary Mangelson (Sue), Lisa Winger (Mike), Julene Barrett (Tim), Cindy Allen (Chris), Leslee Clark (Steve), Lianne Peterson (Shane), Bryan Mangelson (Jenna), her sister Linda Christensen, her 35 Grandchildren, 26 Great-Grandchildren (with more on the way), along with many nephews, nieces, and in-laws of every kind.

The world is a little dimmer with her passing. There is no way to sum up her life in a few paragraphs.  She led an amazing life centered around her two loves – Christ and his gospel, and her family.  No sacrifice was too great, and no challenge was too hard to overcome with these things at her side. She passed away on the same day that her parents met 92 years before – a fitting day to bring her life full-circle.

She loved movies, ice cream, reading, See’s Candies, doing anything with Nolan or her kids, Sunday dinners with any of the family that could be there and a houseful of love and people.  She had a passion for education – in addition to getting her own bachelor’s degree from Utah State University, she supported and encouraged Nolan and her children through multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees.  She taught everyone she met how to love the way the Savior did – unconditionally – and believing that with enough time and love all of life’s problems could be solved.

Her passing leaves a void in our lives not only because of her absence, but because she taught  about the Savior’s love in the way she lived her life every day.  While we will miss her, we take comfort knowing that she was released from the physical trials and discomfort she felt at the end of her life.

A viewing will take place on Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Sundberg-Olpin & Wheeler Mortuary located at 495 S. State Street, Orem, UT from 6-8 pm.  Her funeral will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 365 S. 900 E. Orem, UT with a viewing from 10:00 am – 11:00 am and the funeral services starting at 11:30 am.

Interment will be at the Orem Cemetery at 1520 N. 800 E. Orem, UT. Following the services a family luncheon will be served at the church. We invite all her family, friends, and neighbors to come to her funeral to learn more about this amazing woman and share in her love of family and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
