Maria Elena (Villegas) Escamilla: Born August 24th, 1934, in Mexico, Maria Elena Escamilla was a force to be reckoned with until her passing on Sunday morning, June 25th, 2023, in Orem, Utah. Known for her lively spirit and colorful life, Maria Elena left an indelible mark on all those who crossed her path.
Maria Elena's journey began in Mexico City, Mexico, where she was born and raised. On her 18th birthday, she embarked on a lifelong adventure when she married Sem Escamilla Carvajal, her beloved partner in crime. Together, they braved the highs and lows of life, raising nine children who inherited their mother's zest for living.
While Maria Elena was known for her energetic personality, her culinary skills were not always as reliable. Many dared to sample her meals, but the brave ones had to navigate the occasional expired food item. Nevertheless, Maria Elena's infectious laughter and inviting nature made every gathering a memorable affair. She was always the life of the party, ensuring that no one was left without a smile on their face.
In addition to her vibrant social life, Maria Elena achieved remarkable feats in her later years. At the age of 70, she defied expectations by graduating as a skilled massage therapist. Her nimble hands comforted and relieved many, leaving a lasting impression on those lucky enough to receive her healing touch.
Maria Elena's boundless spirit extended beyond her personal achievements. She blazed a trail for her family as the first member to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a testament to her faith, Maria Elena served as a Spanish-speaking instructor at the MTC (Missionary Training Center), touching the lives of countless missionaries preparing to spread their message worldwide.
1975 Maria Elena immigrated to the United States with her family, seeking new opportunities and a brighter future. The Escamilla clan sealed their love and commitment as a family in the Mesa, Arizona Temple in 1965, a momentous occasion that Maria Elena cherished. Her unwavering faith and devotion to her loved ones shaped her legacy, and she often reminded her family that their presence in this new land was due to her determination and resilience.
Maria Elena leaves behind a vast family tree, including numerous great-grandchildren who will carry her spirit forward. As an honorary member of the infamous "Fingir" drug cartel, she added a touch of intrigue to her already remarkable life story.
In celebrating the life of Maria Elena (Villegas) Escamilla, we remember her as a pioneer, a matriarch, and a woman whose infectious laughter and unwavering love will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
