Margaret was born to Arden Edwin and Hazel Hilton Allen on August 4, 1933, in Oakland, California. On July 1, 2024, she passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with old age and FSHD Muscular Dystrophy.
She grew up in Oakland, California when LDS members were longing for the Oakland Temple to be built. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1952. Marrying Glenn K. Shaw in the Logan Temple soon after that.
Growing up during the height of the Great Depression she learned many homemaking skills and how to make do with things she saved. After losing her mother early on in her marriage, Margaret felt left on her own to teach, support, and provide for her children. Learning how to be resilient, and live with minimal things, she passed these well-known traits on to her children.
She always strived to help others and to be humble. She held MANY church callings in Primary, Young Women and Relief Society including Relief Society President. She served full time in the Los Angeles Temple during her retirement years.
She worked full time most of her life, always finding employment wherever her family lived. She eventually retired as a project manager from Hughes Aircraft/Raytheon in Southern California.
Margaret was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and encouraged her six children to follow her. She worked hard to keep her children unified as a family, firmly believing in a bright future for all of them. She happily devoted most of her spare time to helping her many friends and the less fortunate wherever she lived. She used her cooking, sewing and crocheting skills to share her love with others.
Mom traveled the world spreading her happiness and friendly attitude from Sweden to Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Germany, China, Brazil, and all over the United States. Everywhere she traveled, she always made a new friend.
One of her lifelong wishes was being called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was thrilled to be called to serve as a Church Service Missionary assigned to Family Search Records. She served diligently June 24, 2019, to November 9, 2021. In addition, she took it upon herself to send birthday cards to church members sharing her love for them because it was something she could do while bedridden.
Margaret was the last surviving member of her family of birth. She was excited to be reunited with her loved ones who preceded her in death as she imagined it would be a wonderful celebration to behold. Margaret was preceded in death by her mother Hazel Hilton, her daughter Sandra Lynn Shaw, her father Arden Edwin Allen, and her brother Joseph H. Allen.
Margaret is survived by her children Allen (JulieAnn), Steven (Vickie), Ruth, Douglas, and Jeanette, 15 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and many four-legged grandchildren.
We are, and will be eternally grateful to our Sister-in-Law JulieAnn Shaw, for unselfishly volunteering as our mother’s full-time caregiver for the last 3.5 years of her life. We appreciate you very much.
