Leland passed away at the age of 93 in the early morning hours on October 22, 2021. He had been ill for some time.
He was born to Florence Billings and Roy Henry Gappmayer on April 3rd, 1928 and grew up in the Orem, Utah area. He is survived by two younger brothers, Richard and Merrill. He served as the ship’s baker in the Navy for two years at the conclusion of World II.
He met LaVern Ercanbrack at Lincoln High School in the 10th grade and married her in the Salt Lake Temple in August of 1947. They had nine children. They lost David Bartl at birth and are survived by Kathy Lee, Gayle Lynn, Michael Roy, Debra, JoDee, Marianne, Rebecca and Roy Henry.
Leland has 41 grandchildren, 145 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren with an eighth coming in November.
Leland had many jobs during his 93 1/2 years of life. Brick mason, contractor, Geneva Steel worker, and hometown farmer are just a few of them. He taught the brick mason apprentice program at Utah Valley Community College. He set an example of hard work and dedication for his family all through his life.
He traveled through life, had many different types of adventures, and met many people, most of whom he called friends. He was certainly blessed throughout life.
After LaVern passed away, Leland spent some time at the Orem Senior Center, where he met Lois Trevort and married her in February of 2002. They were married for 10 years when she became ill and passed away. They had many adventures traveling with tour groups.
Leland had many life stories and he loved to tell them to friends and family, especially his grandkids. He was a good son, a good husband, a good father and grandfather to many. We are all blessed to have had his example in our lives.
We know that it was time for him to move on. We are happy that he could travel to the next part of his life where he can reunite with our mother, his parents and other friends and family members.
