Leila Horne

June 10, 1923 — May 2, 2015

Leila Rae Welling Horne graduated peacefully from this life on May 2, 2015 to be reunited with her sweetheart Phyll after a 35 year separation. Her love of music, family and the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ provided the backdrop of a life defined by her desire to serve and uplift others. Leila was born June 10, 1923, in North Farmington, Utah; the fifth child and fourth daughter of George Albert and Judith Oviatt Welling. She was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple to C. Phyll Horne on September 8, 1943. Together they raised a family of seven children in Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia. Following Phyll's death in 1980, Leila returned to Utah to join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Leila will long be remembered for her lovely Soprano voice that she willingly shared at many venues. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities and also fulfilled four missions for the Church. Leila is survived by her seven children, Judith (Paul) Hansen, Michael (Christine) Horne, Bryant (Marynell) Horne, Kathleen (Leon) Bjarnason, Deborah (David) Wise, Rebecca (Christopher) Jackson, and David (Michelle) Horne; 32 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren. The family will welcome visitors Friday, May 8, 2015, at the Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home, 495 South State Street, Orem, UT from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and on Saturday, May 9, from 9:30am to 10:30am at the Mueller Park 2nd Ward building, 1825 South 800 East, Bountiful, Utah. Funeral services will begin at 11:00am followed by the interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Perpetual Education Fund or the Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
