Kenneth Rush Sumpter

May 17, 1939 — November 6, 2024

Orem, Utah

With reverence and admiration for a life well lived, the family of Kenneth Rush Sumpter announce his passing on November 6, 2024. Rush, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and teacher passed away peacefully at the age of 85. He was born on May 17, 1939, in Ogden, Utah to Irvin Rush Sumpter and Clarice Horton and lived a life full of devotion to his Savior with a passion for stories, music, education and service to his family, community, and country.

Rush’s love for a good story was apparent throughout his life. He was a voracious reader, an avid theatergoer, and an inspiring educator. For over three decades, he taught English and Native American literature at Brigham Young University with a desire to bring education to first-generation students which resulted in frequent travel to Native American reservations around the West to prepare students for success and new opportunities.

Proud of his country, Rush served in the Utah National Guard for 21 years concluding his service as Lieutenant Colonel.

On February 14, 1964, Rush married his best friend and life partner, Carol Meservy. Together for 60 years, they established a loving, supportive family that brought Rush immeasurable joy including five children: Richelle (Kent) Andersen of Orem, Utah; Rob (Tori) Sumpter of Lehi, Utah; Carlene Sumpter of Orem, Utah; Cherlynn (Smokey) Imes of Orem, Utah; and Steve (Karen) Sumpter of Goodyear, Arizona.

He always had a twinkle in his eyes and a quick-to-chuckle smile that warmed every room, letting those around him know of his generous, authentic nature. When asked, “How are you?” his consistent reply was “Happy.” He was truly happy while listening to Carol, his lovely wife, play music.

He was a devoted father, always eager to read a story, lend a listening ear, offer advice, or share a laugh. His wisdom was based in a commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, devotion to his Heavenly Father, and in service to his fellowmen. Throughout his life, his discipline and consistency of manner were reflected in his life-long service and devotion to others in roles such as Missionary, Bishop, Patriarch, and Sealer.

Rush is remembered for his wit, his warmth, and his deep sense of integrity. Whether recounting a funny antidote, discussing a piece of literature, or reflecting on life’s great adventures, he had a unique way of making those around him feel seen, heard, and valued. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the lessons he taught, and the family he leaves behind.

Rush is survived by his beloved wife Carol, his five children, his “Lucky Thirteen” grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, his brother, Wynston Sumpter, and sister Nell (Bill) Gurr. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service to celebrate Rush’s life will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 am in the Cherry Hill 5th Ward located at 135 East 2000 South, Orem, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held on Friday evening, November 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Sundberg Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State Street in Orem, and on Saturday prior to the service from 9:30 – 10:30 am at the church.
