Kay Howard Kempton, 73, passed away on January 30, 2016 in Provo, Utah. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 11, 1942 to Howard William and Mary Alice Davis Kempton, he grew up in Midvale, Utah, and attended Jordan High School, where he excelled in academics and debate. He went on to spend his freshman year at Columbia University in New York. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern States Mission. He received a Bachelors'Degree in Philosophy and Psychology from Brigham Young University. He also did post-graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley. Howard married Sheryl Anne Condie in 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Provo, Kearns, and Orem, Utah. They are the parents of six children: daughters Patricia Kammerman (Aaron) of Kearns; Sheryl Carty (Ryan) of South Jordan; Mary Kemp (Jason) of Orem; Elizabeth Quealy (Dar) of Midvale; and sons Jonathan (Mijoung) of Provo; and Mark (Katherine) of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Howard's life was centered around his family and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church callings, including Gospel Doctrine teacher, High Councilor, Ward Clerk, and Bishop. He showed kindness throughout his life and helped many people through their challenges. Howard loved learning and took every opportunity to learn something new and share it with others. He taught religion at Brigham Young University and he taught humanities at Salt Lake Community College. A highlight of his life was assisting with archeological excavations in Israel. He also enjoyed performing in plays. His greatest joy was his family. His grandchildren are: John, Reed, Anna, Hyrum, Elizabeth, Jacob, and Emily Kammerman; Dylan and Destry Carty; Britton, Haley, Lily, and Ella Kemp; Ethan and Lucy Quealy; and Chloie, William, and Alice Kempton. He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Emily. A viewing will be held on Friday, February 5 from 6-8 P.M. at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem, Utah. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, February 6 at the Cherry Hill Seventh Ward Chapel, 135 E. 2000 S. in Orem. There will be a viewing from 9-9:45 A.M., prior to the services. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery.
