Our dear mother Janis Virginia Smith, 83, of Orem, Utah passed away surrounded by her loved ones on August 12th, 2022. She was born April 29th, 1939 in Los Angeles, California to Virginia Clinger Birk and Albert Thornton Birk. She married our beloved father, David John Vida and had three children: Laura, Julia and David. Later in life she was blessed to marry Jerrold (Jerry) Smith on April 6th, 1993. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Provo Temple. She was blessed to become the bonus mom of eight children.
Janis was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many auxiliaries and capacities. Jerry and Janis served a full-time mission in Brussels, Belgium. Following their return, they enjoyed serving in the Lindon, Utah cannery. They also had the honor of serving as ordinance workers in both the Timpanogos and Provo temples. Janis loved serving the Lord and continued her service at the MTC in Provo and cherished her time there.
Janis will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, spouse and friend. She is loved and will be missed by many.
Janis is survived by her children Laura Vida, Julia Miller, David Vida; her twin sister Joyce Jones-Haws and sister Diana Adair; eight bonus children Richard Smith, David Smith, Jeralyn Lovell, Annette Harman, Sherryl Richardson, Barbara Redd, Jonathan Smith and Cydney Greenhalf; 39 grandchildren, and 83 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her eternal companion Jerrold Smith, parents Albert Thorton and Virginia Birk, and brother Richard Birk.
Her viewing and funeral services will be held at Sundberg-Olpin and Wheeler Funeral home, located at 495 S State Street in Orem. A viewing for friends and family will be held Thursday evening August, 18th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Friday, August 19th at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing just prior to the service from 9:30-10:30. Interment will take place at Ben Lomond Cemetery, located at 526 E. 2850 N. North Ogden, Utah.
