Jack Jones

June 30, 1927 — September 4, 2014

Jack D. Jones passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2014 at his home in Orem, Utah. For many years the first thing I did in the morning was to check the obituaries and see if I was there and, if I was there, I wasn't going to do anything else the rest of the day. Today I found me there. As you read this, they say I have passed on to a better place of peace and rest. I hope it is so; it is going to have to be great to equal the fine life I have had here on earth. I was born in Provo, Utah on June 30, 1927 to D. Henry Jones and Anna Laverne Duncan. I was raised on a fruit farm in the Edgemont area, and attended Page Elementary School. I graduated from Seminary and Lincoln High School in 1945. I was active in school band, football and track. I joined the U.S. Merchant Marines after high school, trained at Catalina Island in California and then sailed on merchant ships for two years into ports such as the Philippines, Hong Kong and others. After discharge I attended Brigham Young University. I married my high school sweetheart, Belva Wentz August 11, 1948 in the Logan LDS Temple, and have lived in Orem ever since. We have five wonderful children; Allan, Debra, Lynn, Karen & Diane. I was a small business owner, operating a service station in Edgemont, where I sold gas and did all kinds of mechanical work and auto repairs. I also worked for Utah LaGrange building fire engines, and as a mechanic for Corbett Trailer Sales. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and have served in various callings within the Church. I was very active for many years in both the Elk's Club and the Lion's Club, and had the privilege of participating in many charitable activities with both organizations. I was also a long time member of the Timpanogos Archery Club. I have always loved the outdoors, and have been an avid fisherman, hunter, boater, golfer and skier. The bow and rifle hunt seasons were the best time of the year. For a number of years Belva and I were part-owners of a hunting and fishing lodge in the Alaska bush, where we provided great hunting and fishing adventures for clients. It was a wonderful time of our life with so many memorable experiences. Belva and I traveled many places together, and I can't wait to see where this new adventure will take us. Sundance was my favorite place to ski, and I was determined that each of my children learned to ski well, and I think that they were all pretty successful. I also tried hard to teach all of my grandchildren to ski, hunt, fish and swim. MY children were also taught to pump their own gas, change tires and oil, and pack wheel bearings. They also claim that I taught them to be enthusiastic shoppers, especially for loud and intrusive toys. I don't think any of that is true, but there was that one fish finder at Cabelas in Nebraska that I regret got away. I have to add that my favorite color is red, but my favorite team is BYU. I am survived by my wife Belva and by four children; Debra (Brad) Grieve, Lynn Floyd, Karen (Mark) Larsen, Diane (Rob) Dean; a daughter-in-law Sherri Jones; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. I was preceded in death by my parents, all of my siblings, our son Allan and one grandson Michael Sean. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Sunset Heights 8th Ward Chapel at 500 South 600 West Orem, Utah. There will be a viewing at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State St., Orem, Utah on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 6:00-8:00pm and from 9:30-10:30am at the church prior to the funeral service. Don't be late for the funeral because those who know me know how important it is to me to be on time for everything. Burial will be at the East Lawn Cemetery, 4800 North 650 East, Provo (Edgemont). My family and I wish to express thanks and gratitude to all those who have asked about me, and the staff of Home Care Assistance and Sunrise Home Health & Hospices-especially to Mary who treated me with such love and respec
