Our dear father and grandfather, Herman David Whitenight, joined his sweetheart in heaven on July 12, 2016. Born to Mary Elizabeth Smith Whitenight and Herman David Whitenight, Sr. on May 23, 1930 in Homestead, Pennsylvania. The Dunn family moved next door to the Whitenights when Herman was 12 years old. Their daughter, Margie Ann was his “Honeybunch” and he was her “Bouze” from that time forward. Margie Ann never missed any of his football games at Munhall High School. He also shared her love and study of art. They took classes together at Carnegie Museum of Art later continuing their studies at Carnegie Tech known now as Carnegie Melon University. Herman and Margie Ann married on March 8, 1952
Herman served in the Air Force during the Korean War. His wife and baby daughter joined him in Tokyo, Japan beginning the first adventure of their married life together. After the war he resumed his studies adding engineering to his art courses while also playing college football. He graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He continued his education, completing a master’s degree in Math and Science. The development of his professional career as an engineer allowed he and his family to experience many different areas of the nation. Several of these positions required high level FBI security clearances. He became one of the few nuclear energy engineering experts of his time, completing his career at the United Stated Department of Energy facilities in Oakridge, Tenn.
While living in New Jersey he, his wife and four children were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Herman and Margie Ann joined the Church and were sealed together for time and all eternity on June 30, 1966 in the Salt Lake City temple. He served diligently wherever needed in bishoprics, Sunday Schools, and always as a member of Ward and Stake Choirs. He also loved singing as a member of Barbershop SPEBSQA and various Community Choruses.
Herman is survived by his children; Kathy Whitenight, Susan Whitenight, Mary-Jane (Steven) Whitenight-Bertram, David (JoLayne) Whitenight, 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Waiting at heaven’s gate after his game of life has finished is his “Honeybunch”, sweetheart and wife, Margie Ann. Also celebrating their reunion in heaven his parents, Mary and Herman Whitenight and his brother Harry and Daniel Newton Whitenight.
