H (Hazel) Doreen Edwards, 84, of Orem, Utah, passed away the morning of April 6, 2019. She was born the youngest of four children to Victor George Paxford and May Riley on March, 16, 1935, in Warwickshire, England.
As a child of World War II, she retained vivid memories of air raids, bombs, machine guns and food shortages, all while trying to maintain normal family routines and attending school. A shy child, she especially loved playing made-up games with her big brother, George, roasting chestnuts by the fire with her siblings, and the festivities of Christmas.
Some years after the War, her family emigrated to Australia to start new lives. As a member of the Church of England (Episcopal), Doreen had mixed feelings about religion and explored a number of churches. While living in a boarding house for young women, Doreen met missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized into the Church.
As a result of her deep convictions, Doreen lost friends, family, and a beloved fiancé and ultimately emigrated to Canada and then to Salt Lake City, where she worked for the Genealogical Society. Soon thereafter, she met her husband-to-be, Bill Couch, and had four children, Peter, Karen, Barbara and Diana.
Although she was ultimately unlucky in love and marriage, she was a hard worker, had a lively sense of humor, loved to dance, was a passionate BYU Cougars fan, and loved animals. Above all, she gave everything she had to raising her family. She considered her testimony of Jesus Christ and her membership in his Church, together with her four children, to be the crowning achievements of her life.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by her four children, Peter (Charlotte) Edwards, Karen (Dave) Roberts, Barbara (Ken) Hehl, and Diana (Brad Allen) Evans. She adored her nineteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren who loved her back fiercely.
