February 17, 1957 — March 19, 2025

Lehi

Gregory Nyal Schouten, a devoted disciple of Christ, loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and true go-giver, passed away peacefully at his home on March 19, 2025.

Born on February 17, 1957, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Fred and Maurine Grover Schouten, Gregg was raised in Hayward, California. After high school, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Toronto, Canada, before attending BYU, where he met Jodi Herring. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on March 27, 1981, and spent 35 years together, raising seven wonderful children. Of all his life’s joys, his children and grandchildren were his greatest pride and happiness.

Gregg had a larger-than-life presence and a giving heart. He taught his children the power of boldness, honesty, and unconditional love. Though he may not have always had much, he was always willing to share whatever he had. His love was shown through small, thoughtful gestures—countless phone calls just to check in, unexpected visits, dropping off ice cream or little surprises, and lending a hand whenever needed.

Throughout his life, Gregg wore many hats and worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He led by example, instilling in his children the values of hard work, grit, mental toughness, and bold, honest communication. From a young age, he taught his children to forge their own paths, to take pride in doing things right, and to always finish what they started. His influence shaped six devoted full-time missionaries, six college graduates, and a legacy of professionals including successful entrepreneurs, sales leaders, nurses, and medical consultants. His life was a testament to dedication, perseverance, and hard work.

He loved to connect, to tell stories, and to make people laugh. His energy was contagious, and he never wanted to be alone. He found joy in talking about his children and sharing their accomplishments with pride. Even in his later years, when he felt the weight of loneliness, he continued reaching out—always eager for a conversation, a laugh, or simply the company of those he loved.

Gregg’s legacy is one of love and service. He was a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a neighbor, and most importantly, a friend, to so many. His spirit is now free, but his impact will continue to be felt in the lives he touched.

Gregg is survived by his children: Vaughn Schouten, Janice Schouten, Bryan Schouten (Shae), Dayne Schouten (Morgan), Tyran Schouten, Christa Hamilton (Eric), and Jayden Schouten (Brynna); former wife, Jodi Herring Schouten; his sisters, Hillary Peterson and Becky Cowles; and his nine cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Maurine Schouten, and his brothers, Kyle, Kevin, Barry, and Brad.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Orem Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East in Orem, with Bishop Trevor Stubbs officiating. The family will receive visitors on Thursday evening from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Wheeler-Sundberg Funeral Home, 495 S.
