Gary was born on July 26, 1933, in Vernal, Utah, to Rulon Wells Ashby and Elsie Henry Ashby. He married his sweetheart Mildred Anne Anderson on June 20, 1958, in the Salt Lake City Temple. He attended Uintah High School, Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and University of Washington, graduating with a BS degree in Accounting and an MBA.
Gary started his career with Arthur Anderson in San Francisco and went on to own different business ventures. He was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he led a dedicated life of service to the church, including as a high counselor, bishop and member of a stake presidency.
Gary was known for his strong patriotism and loved to serve in his community. His service included Chairman of the Utah County Republican Party, board member of the Utah Chamber of Commerce, and service on several committees and boards for Utah Valley Community College, Stevens-Henager College, and Brigham Young University, as well as numerous other civic organizations and projects. He grew up on a ranch and loved riding and training horses.
Gary is survived by his five children and their spouses, 22 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, one brother, one sister and two sisters-in-law. He is preceded by his parents, spouse, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, UT. Viewings will be held at the mortuary on Friday, July 7, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., just prior to the funeral services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
