Frederick Brown

On April 7, 2023, Frederick Charles Brown of Highland, Utah passed away at the age of 82. He was born in Dante, Virginia as the only child of Ruth Hayter Brown and Frederick John Brown.

Fred met Suzanne (Long) Brown while living in Norfolk, Virginia. They married on August 10, 1965. They were later sealed in the American Fork Temple. They were married for over 57 years.

Fred and Suzanne Brown’s children include:

Deborah Louise Brown (Ralph White), Frederick (Chuck) Brown Jr., Michael Steven Brown, Frederick Charles Brown, III (Darcy Brown), Patrick John Brown, David Shawn Brown, Sarah Ruth Hansen (Michael Hansen), and Suzanne Lorreign Peterson (Brian Peterson). They have 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Fred converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints while in Virginia. After a visit to General Conference, he decided to move to Orem, Utah where they lived for 36 years. Throughout the years, Fred had an opportunity to serve in many capacities. From Nursery, Scouting, the Bishopric, and more, he was happy to help in whatever ways he was asked. He fulfilled his service with a smile and helping attitude. He was grateful for all his opportunities and spoke of them often.

Fred and Suzanne served as missionaries in the Chesapeake Virginia Mission. They worked in the mission office where they served with honor.  He was dedicated to the missionaries to ensure they had comfortable and safe places to live. They met many friends while serving, he was always very proud of his time spent there. On three separate opportunities, Fred completed Service Missions with Deseret Industries. While there, he helped many with crucial life skills and workforce development skills.  He also taught English classes as a second language (ESL), as well as instructed General Education Development (GED) classes. His service there benefited a multitude of generations to come.

Fred graduated from Utah Technical College and, then, Brigham Young University with a degree in Social Work. He graduated while both working and raising his family. To better provide for his family, he studied and worked long hours until he received his degree. He was a hard-working, devoted father and husband.

After graduation, Fred began work at the Utah Developmental Center until he retired from the workforce. As a social worker, Fred had a great love for the people; he dedicated his life to helping others. He was a caring social worker and had a deep connection with the many challenges the residents faced. He truly excelled at his work, and he was honored for the way he cared for others during this time.

Fred enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children. He was a master fisherman from the seashores in Florida and Virginia. He boasted of many great catches, some of which were true, while spending time there. He was also a master fly fisherman. While on a lake shore or riverbank from Alaska, Idaho, and Utah he found beautiful scenery and always a hungry trout. He could often be found on the banks of the Provo River, American Fork River, and the Green River. His legacy of fishing and fly tying has been passed on to many of the youth he served, as well as his children and grandchildren; they have shared their passion with many to this day.

Fred was an avid gardener. He spent countless hours in his beautiful gardens where he was known to plant various species of plants and trees. He loved his fruit trees, and so did the many individuals that had a chance to pick from his gardens. He grew all types of fruits and vegetables. He recently planted trees that he knew he would not see come to maturity. His hope is that they would provide for others in the years to come, long after he was gone.

Services honoring Fred will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at the church located at 1260 South 400 West in Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held at 10:30-11:30 on that morning with a memorial service following at 12:00 PM. We invite you to join us to celebrate the many wonderful times we had with our husband, father, grandpa, and friend.
