Florence Louise (Roberts) Stadstad, age 96, of Orem, Utah, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. She was born December 9, 1921 in Durango, La Plata, Colorado, second child of Louis Dermont Roberts and Winifred Louise Dean Roberts. She is the oldest daughter of 12 children and survived by 6 of her brothers and sisters.
Florence attended Brigham Young University where she received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Secondary Education with minors in Psychology and Sociology. She then taught History at Orem High School. After the birth of her 4th child with learning disabilities, she changed her focus and passion to educating and assisting children and adults with disabilities. She spent the remainder of her life fulfilling those aspirations.
Florence returned to school while living in Victorville, California, and received her Master’s Degree at Chapman College in Pupil Personnel Counseling Services. She then went from the classroom to counseling and administrating. Her many accomplishments include:
Five-years teaching special needs children in a self-contained classroom.
Five-years organizing and instructing special needs classes on a Junior High and High School level.
Three-years Vocational Rehabilitation Leader in a Senior High School setting.
Owned and operating a home for special needs boys in California.
Special Services Family Counselor for special needs individuals, parents and siblings.
Fourteen-year member of C.E.C. (Council for Exceptional Children).
President of San Bernardino County Association for Special Needs Citizens.
Director of A.R.C. Respite Program for temporary parent relief.
Twenty-one-year member of A.R.C.
President of the Utah County Chapter of A.R.C.
Committee member/Executive Council of the Utah State Association for Special Needs Citizens.
Two years as Special Services Family Counselor
Three-years as U.S.T.S. Program Director/Team Leader
January 4, 1993, Florence was appointed by Utah State Governor, Michael O. Leavitt, to the office of “Board of Services for People with Disabilities.” Ratified by the Senate.
Florence was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has served In the Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School and Young Women’s organizations. She loves the Church and has loved her opportunities to serve.
Florence was married to Curtis Alfred Stadstad on June 13, 1967 in Victorville, California, and sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on November 9, 1968. Curtis proceeded her in death on September 26, 2002. She is survived by 4 Children, 14 Grandchildren, 30 Great-Grandchildren and 15 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Lakeview 2nd Ward Church, 400 West 1800 South, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held on Thursday at the church from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
