Evelyn Toone

May 21, 1920 — September 26, 2014

Our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Evelyn Rachel Davis Toone, passed away on September 26, 2014 at the age of 94. She slipped away peacefully surrounded by family. Evelyn was born May 21, 1920 in the Starr Community of Anderson, South Carolina to Calvin Leo and Rachel Elizabeth Hefner Davis. Raised in a southern mill town during the Great Depression, Evelyn worked and studied to improve her life and that of her family members. She graduated from Anderson Girls High School in 1939, and attended Anderson College from 1939 to 1940 on a journalism scholarship. She served a mission for the LDS Church in Jackson, Mississippi in 1941. On February 3, 1943 she married Dean William Toone in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are the parents of six children, Sylvia Toone (Jim Baxter), Carol Burmester (Joel), D. William Toone, Jr. (Mary Frances), Marilyn Toone, Becki Adams (Scott), and David K. Toone (Theresa). She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Dean, her parents, her sister Mildred Ellen Davis, her brothers, Wade Earl Davis, Parks Hefner Davis and James Talmage Davis; a son-in-law, Joel T. Burmester and a great-grandson, Luke Thomas Conrad. She is survived by her six children, 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Smart and determined, Evelyn created a quality home life which continues to resonate in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With her sweetheart, Dean, they set a high standard of scholarship, excellence and aesthetic appreciation for our family. Mom always made her home a gathering place for her children and grandchildren. Her gentle southern style and humor made those who knew her feel welcome and at home. She was firm in her love for the gospel and served faithfully in many callings. Most of all, she loved her family. We will miss her always being there for us with warm welcoming smiles, love, enthusiastic interest and hot meals. The family wants to express heartfelt thanks to all her neighbors and ward family members for the countless acts of kindness and care over the years. We also express thanks to the staff at Stonehenge for the gentle care provided in her final weeks, the ER staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and especially Kirk and Abe from Encompass Home Care for those feisty verbal and physical therapy workouts which benefited her so much. We feel happy that she is in a better place and happily reunited with her sweetheart, parents, siblings and all those loved ones who went before. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in the Cascade 1st Ward Chapel, 481 East Center St. in Orem. A viewing will be held from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm that day at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
