Evan Baugh

Evan Alvin Baugh, 97, of Orem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, with his family at his bedside. He was born on February 15, 1920, in Hyrum, Utah, the youngest child of Peter Baugh and Alice Anderson Baugh. He married Clara Walters Bair Baugh on March 7, 1941, in the Logan LDS Temple.

The youngest of eight children growing up in humble circumstances, Dad learned to work hard at a young age. He was a good student and an outstanding basketball and tennis player in high school and at Utah State University. He was awarded his undergraduate degree and military commission on the same day in 1942.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 46 months (1942-46) and was stationed at Fort Worden, Washington, as well as in Washington D.C. in OSS training, and in the Philippines. In 1948, he moved with his wife and three children (later two more children were born to them) to Orem, Utah, where he taught math and coached basketball at Lincoln High for seven years. Once the new Orem High was built in 1956, he elected to remain at the Lincoln Junior High where he continued to teach math. He later became the principal of that school and then principal of the newly built Lakeridge Junior High. He retired in 1980 after having taught for 19 years and been a principal for 17.

Dad enjoyed fishing, hunting, tennis, and golf. He served as president of the Utah School Administrators Association and President of the Orem Kiwanis Club. He worked for many years in the summer for SCERA, running the men’s softball program and later, the junior baseball program. He was a high school football and basketball official for many years until he became a school principal. He refereed college basketball in the old Skyline Conference and then in the Western Athletic Conference for 13 years. Following his retirement, he served for 15 years in various leadership capacities for AARP in the Western States. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in a number of capacities including High Priest Group Leader, counselor in a bishopric, and as a temple ordinance worker with his wife Clara. His last formal church callings, which he faithfully fulfilled, were home teaching and assisting Cub Scouts and their leaders. Most of all, he was an outstanding father and grandfather. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and they dearly love him.

Evan is survived by his wife Clara; his five children: Gary (Joan) Baugh of Moreno Valley, CA; Steven (Cathleen) Baugh of Orem; Beverly (Leland) Bird of Springville; Katherine Lynn (Belmont) Anderson of Las Vegas; Julie (Brian) Whipple of Spring City; 32 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Sharon 6th Ward Chapel, 545 South 800 East in Orem. A viewing for friends and family will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem and Saturday at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m. just prior to services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion. We appreciate the outpouring of love, support, and service that has been given to our family at this time, especially from the Symbii Hospice Group.
