Eugene Vernon Flowers
02/28/1925 - 04/24/2016
Eugene Vernon Flowers died at home on April 24, 2016, at the age of 91. Gene was born on February 28, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Walter Flowers and Camilla Uhlig Flowers. He served a mission to the North Central States and he always remembered those cold winters in Minnesota. After his mission he started dating a sister missionary from his mission and on December 2, 1948, Gene married Virginia Livingston in the Salt Lake Temple.
Gene was a gifted electrical engineer. He did electrical work on aircraft at HAFB and then worked as an electrician at Chicago Bridge & Iron. He enjoyed everything electrical including work on space simulation chambers, off-shore oil storage, natural gas pipelines, and cryogenic storage facilities. He worked at various projects until age 76 despite his struggles with crippling arthritis.
Gene was always a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His favorite calling was gospel doctrine teacher. He put in many hours each day preparing his lesson for Sunday and he loved researching answers to the questions members asked him and showing the historical church artifacts and books that he treasured.
Gene and Virginia were a completely loyal and devoted couple. Gene cherished his wife and made their marriage a divine institution. The youngsters in the family identified Gene and Virginia together so completely that they called them Virgene.
Gene is survived by his son Kent, his granddaughter Michelle, and his sister Gertrude Waterman. He is predeceased by his wife, his infant son Mark, his sisters Margaret, Camilla, and Effie, and his brother Clarence.
Funeral services will be held at the Winder 6th Ward, 4366 South 1500 East, on Friday, April 29, at 12:00 noon. Friends may attend a viewing on Thursday evening from 6-7:30 and Friday beginning at 11:00 at the church. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
