On February 9, 2016, Doyle Q Thurston peacefully left his loving family here on earth and was received into the loving arms of his Savior, his parents, and his loving family on the other side of the veil, as a result of congestive heart failure.
Doyle was born August 14, 1923 in Richfield, Utah, to Edwin Elroy and Martena Sorensen Thurston, the eighth of ten boys. His family moved to Provo when he was in high school. After he graduated he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1943 to 1945, principally in the Pacific Theater, protecting transports bringing supplies to the troops. During this time he met Helen Miller, and following a whirlwind romance, they were married in Concord, California. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
When the war ended they moved to Provo, where they raised their family. After they retired they moved to Orem.
Doyle worked at BYU as an electrician for nearly 30 years. His projects included much of the exterior lighting around campus and the lighting for the LaVell Edwards Stadium. He was LaVell's goto man for the nighttime team practices. He loved and cherished that association.
Doyle and Helen set a goal to visit every temple in the 48 contiguous States and had a wonderful time doing their best to complete that goal. This service, as well as all his assignments in the church, was a joy to him.
Doyle is survived by Helen, his loving wife for over 70 years; one brother, Robert V. Thurston; children: Pamela (Lynn) Mitchell, Dawn (Charles-dec.) Loper, Michele (Rodney) Eastman, Roxanne (Wendell) Cloward, MarTina (Gene) Harris, Robert (Lori) Thurston, Lloyd (Carolyn) Thurston; 27 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and foster daughter Sharlynne Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, daughter-in-law Christy Adams Thurston, and sons-in-law Randy Mitchell and Charles Loper.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M at the Aspen 3rd Ward chapel, 1546 N. 1100 W. Orem, on Saturday, February 13, 2016. A visitation will be held at the Sundberg Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State Street, Orem, Friday evening from 6-8 P.M., and before the services from 9 - 9:45 A.M. at the church.
