David Richard Dinsdale died peacefully on August 13, 2014 at the age of 87 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, friend, chef, and patriarch of the entire Dinsdale family clan. Those who loved him will sorely miss his kindness, intellect and great humor, but will cherish our memories and the role model he provided for us. David was born on June 6, 1927 in Ogden Utah, to James Ross and Bergliot Elisabeth Simonsen Dinsdale. He was raised and educated in Ogden city schools, graduating in June of 1945. After graduation, he enlisted immediately in the U.S. Navy, and served during the last days of World War II. David attended Weber Jr. College (now Weber State University), Brigham Young University, and Utah State University. He graduated from BYU in 1953 with a major in history and political science. At BYU and Utah State, he was in the Air Force ROTC program, where he served as a cadet colonel and deputy division commander. He was the first BYU ROTC cadet to be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force Reserves. He was never called to active duty, since the Korean War ended suddenly after his commission. David met the love of his life-beautiful, talented Colleen Knight, while both were working at Bryce Canyon National Park, where she was a waitress and he a dinner cook. The following May, 1952, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple by Apostle LeGrande Richards. Their marriage was a choice once, and they were blessed with seven children: Jeffrey Dinsdale (Emily), Christine Dinsdale (Jay), Lisa Dinsdale, Julie Smith (Douglas), Diane Probst (Brad), Maria Lewis (Brent) and Denise Mongie (Stephen), all of whom survive him. He was also blessed with 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren,who loved and looked up to him, and will miss him greatly. David's life profession was centered in teaching. He taught junior high school in Gladstone, North Dakota, and in Orem, taught at Lincoln Junior High, Lakeridge Junior High and Mountain View High School. He loved teaching youth, and his many former students continued to contact him throughout his lifetime. He taught a total of 31 years in the public schools, plus two years supervising student teachers for BYU in classrooms throughout Utah and Salt Lake Counties. David was always active in the LDS church, serving in many positions as Priesthood leader, Sunday School teacher, scouting leader, bishop, branch president, bishopric counselor, and high councilor. He filled a stake mission as counselor, along with a full-time mission in the North Central States with the Native Americans on the Fort Belknap reservation. He also served a mission with his sweetheart, Colleen, in New Zealand. He was very proud of his work in the 1960s and 1970s for the newly established alcohol recovery programs of the Church. David was an excellent cook, and relished the pleasure of cooking and of sharing his knowledge and skills with others. As a chef for the Utah Parks Company, he worked at Bryce and Grand Canyons, and also cooked at the Escalante Hotel in Cedar City and various restaurants in Utah County. He especially loved to cook for family and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Suncrest 9th Ward chapel 140 North 400 West in Orem, Utah.
