Darlene Hamilton Berrett, age 86, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
Darlene was born December 19, 1930, in Murray, Utah, to Eldred Reuben Hamilton and Florence Violet Page. She is the oldest of six daughters raised in Riverton, Utah, and grew up working on the family farm. In her younger years, Darlene enjoyed playing saxophone, dancing, writing, drawing, and debating. She was a great student and graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah. She met the love of her life, LaMar C. Berrett, at a church Gold and Green Ball. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 3, 1950, and eventually settled in Orem, Utah, where they raised nine children.
A self-trained business woman, Darlene directed tours with LaMar, managed apartments, and ran the Berrett fruit farm. She traveled the world and particularly loved the Holy Land and sacred LDS church history sites. She was a wonderful homemaker and seamstress, and diligently tended her beautiful flower gardens. As a talented writer, she often expressed her political views in letters to the editor. Her artistic abilities were captured in cherished oil paintings and pencil sketches. She was an avid BYU fan.
Of all of Darlene’s talents, perhaps the greatest include traits of hard-work, diligence, obedience, faithfulness, integrity, and love. Darlene was a walking manifestation of service and sacrifice, and her calling of mother and grandmother was her top priority. She spent her life serving others as a daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She not only raised her own children, but invited into her home and nurtured many others including two Navajo daughters and “adopted” sons and daughters from Guatemala, Jordan, and China.
Darlene was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a disciple of Christ, serving in numerous callings with diligence, kindness and compassion. She served a full-time mission with LaMar in the Ohio, Kirtland Mission, a perfect fit for two experts in LDS church history.
Darlene is preceded in death by her husband, LaMar C. Berrett, and sisters, Cindy Hopkins and Sheila Walker. She is survived by sisters Janice Keeler, Coleen Hamilton, and Carolyn Klopfer, and her children Marla (Vincent) Fuerer, Kim (Ellyn) Berrett, Michael (Karen) Berrett, Susan (Mark) Wilcox, LeAnn (Kevin) Brock, Nathan (Tricia) Berrett, Evan Berrett, Ellen (Steve) Robison, and Jared (Spring) Berrett. She will be sorely missed by her 50 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.
Her children express gratitude to family and friends who have supported and loved Darlene throughout her remarkable life, and those who lovingly cared for her In recent months.
