Dan Jerald Newell, 72, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, of natural causes at his home in American Fork. Dan was born on June 25, 1944, in Provo, Utah, to Daniel Eugene and Ruth Ivie Newell. He grew up among the cherry orchards of Orem.
Dan is well known for his life-long love of music, inspiring trumpet solos, and passion for sharing big band performance. After graduating from Orem High School in 1962, he served in the U.S. Army band, and later studied music at Snow College.
Dan has organized countless ensembles of all sizes for dances, ceremonies, celebrations, parades, and banquet events. His most recent work involved leading the Danny Newell All-Star Band, where he enjoyed mixing things up and cemented enduring friendships.
Dan was a dedicated employee of the Mountainland Head Start school. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Norma, and seven step children, JoLynn Rice, Angela Timothy, Rebecca (Troy) Sorensen, Bryan (Katy) Timothy, Brenda (Jamie) Coleman, Dale (Julia) Timothy, and Marianne (Cory) Accardi. Dan is also survived by his mother Ruth (LeGrande Young) Newell, his brother, Alan (Colette) Newell, his former spouse Rebecca Jensen, and their children, Daniel (Diana) Newell, Sandra (Jon) Maxwell, and Carolyn Newell, Five grandchildren, twenty-four step-grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, also morn his loss. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Eugene Newell, and his daughter, SueAnn Ruth Newell.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the American Fork 16th Ward LDS Chapel, located at 507 West 700 North, American Fork, Utah. Viewings will be held on Friday, April 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, located at 495 South State Street, Orem and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
