Dale Leland Shumway

March 22, 1931 — September 20, 2024

Orem

Dale Leland Shumway, unique son of God, 93, of Orem, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024. He was born March 22, 1931, in Shumway, AZ to Augustus Leland Shumway & Faye Rose Greer. He has four siblings, Katie, Miles, Jerry, all deceased, and his sister Brook. He married Margene Petersen on August 21, 1958, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Dale graduated from Provo High School and BYU and received a Master’s Degree and Administrative Degree from New Mexico Western. He was best known for his authoritative voice, dry humor, and creative expressions. Also evident was his adventurous spirit, love for God, family, BYU sports, and voracious reading. He loved hiking, especially in the red rock country of southern Utah. He also loved camping and traveling-having visited over 100 countries around the world.

Dale loved his country- He served in the army in the Korean conflict and was a true patriot all his life. He also had a special place in his heart for the American Indians. He served a mission as a young man on the Navajo and Hopi reservations and spent his career working with Indian youth, first as a counselor to Indian students at BYU and then 30 years with the Indian Student Placement Program. His job was a joy in his life. In his words:” Never was a job made so perfect for a man as this position was for me.”

Dale was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had great faith in Jesus Christ and served in many callings throughout his life. He and Margene served 3 missions for the Church, first in Kenya, then Mozambique, and lastly on the Navajo Reservation. They also taught English at a university in Beijing, China. Through these opportunities they gained a great love for the people and cultures of these places.

Family and friends were some of the most important things to Dale. He truly loved spending time and connecting with all those close to him, weekly letters to family and friends, monthly family dinners, Bi-annual trips to AZ to visit family and Indian friends, yearly family retreats, plus so much more. He always had a plan in the works! Dale is survived by his amazing wife, Margene; five awesome children, Dan (Debby) of Pleasant Grove, Lori (Dallan) of Highland, Deryl (Isabel) of Lehi, David of Saratoga Springs, and Kelli (Richard) of Shelley, ID; 20 beautiful grandchildren and 27 darling great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 30th at 11 a.m. at the Orem Suncrest Stake Center located at 100 N. and 600 W. A viewing will be held Sunday from 6-7:30 p.m. and prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 at the same location.
