Dale Ray Payton, of Orem, passed away on September 1, 2022, at the age of 99.
Dale was born in Greeley, Colorado on June 10, 1923, to Alfred Ray and Maude Myrtle Reece Payton. On November 28, 1942, Dale married Jean Lorraine Gerriets. They had been married for 53 years, when Jean proceeded him in death, in 1995.
Dale served in the US Army Air Corps during World War Two and fought in the European Theater from 1943-1945. He flew 33 missions as a ball turret gunner in a B-17 bomber.
Dale loved his work as an Operating Engineer. He enjoyed bowling and participated in several leagues, for many years. He loved dancing and big band music. Dale loved animals. He often told stories of the several dogs he had throughout his life and the rabbits he raised as a boy. He loved road trips. Dale was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Dale is survived by one child, Susan Phillips, of Orem; 3 grandchildren, Kristin Foster (Scott), of Pleasant Grove; Gavin Phillips (Tiana), of Pleasant Grove; and Brent Phillips (Miriam), of American Fork; and 10 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, California.
