Charles Michael Howard, age 47, died unexpectedly on May 10, 2023. He leaves behind his fiancée, Broghan Mack, and their 4-year-old son, Julius, who wants to “fly a rocket ship to heaven to see his daddy.” Mikey was truly unique and a shining light that touched many more souls than he could possibly realize. While his face would light up when talking about his beloved little family, he didn’t seem to realize the light he brought to others when he was around. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smirk on his face because another quip was about to sneakily leave his lips.
There’s no one on earth like Mikey Howard; his family and friends are devastated by the loss, and the soreness and pain will never go away. Depression and mental health are something he silently and secretly struggled with for years, and no amount of reaching out, or checking-in on him would ever change the fact that he wanted everyone to think and believe that he was fine - please know that he loved all of his friends, and especially his son very, very much.
Mikey was born in Portsmouth, VA, and raised in Virginia Beach, where he spent the rest of his life. Mikey most recently worked as a bus operator for Hampton Roads Transit. However, his life’s passion was the restaurant industry where he worked for approximately 30 years, spending much of it at Baja Cantina; he was a chef who was revered for his skills both at work and at home. Food was his love language, and he loved to cook a good meal for his friends and those he adored, especially his family.
Mikey had a keen mind and a quick wit. If you were lucky enough, you would find yourself cracking up after he told you a story about a bet he lost or one of his son’s many antics. If he wasn’t quietly entertaining you, he was likely reading (or sleeping). He and Broghan found magic in the J.R.R. Tolkien novels that he had also read with his family when he was young. Mikey was the type of friend who didn’t need to be the center of attention, but you would miss him if he wasn’t there. He was the guy who would give a dollar out of his wallet without letting you know it was his last dollar. He was the uncle who brought a smirk to the faces of his nephews and niece before he even started telling a story. He was the father whose son knew he could do no wrong. Mikey loved his boy so much and spent his free time where it mattered most…with him.
Mikey and the love of his life, Broghan, began dating 7 years ago. He devoted himself to her and their son together. His family is so grateful for the positive influence she had in his life that made him a better man and a doting father.
Mikey is preceded in death by his father (Roger) and his grandparents. He is survived by his mother (Kathleen), his brother Geoff (Lorile) in California and John in Utah, his 3 nephews and niece, his cherished fiancée (Broghan Mack), and his beloved son (Julius).
Mikey’s life will be celebrated on Sunday, May 21, at 5 PM (Eastern) at the MOCA in Virginia Beach. His family would love for friends to join in honoring, remembering, and loving him. A Facebook Live event has been set up to stream for those unable to attend: https://fb.me/e/1guUv1qHI
A Go Fund Me has been set up to pay for services, a later burial in UT, and any additional funds for his fiancée and son ( https://gofund.me/ca66b94e ).
