C. Grant Sheffield

May 31, 1931 — May 11, 2021

Chester Grant Sheffield, aka C. Grant Sheffield born May 31, 1931 to Vaughn Peter and Edith Hacking Sheffield, passed away on May 11, 2021, succumbing to the cancer that he valiantly fought off for more than 20 years.

He was born in his family home on 1st North 1st East Kaysville Utah.  He was the 2nd of 5 sons and attended elementary and high school in Kaysville graduating from Davis High School.  He served a Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Eastern States Mission.   Grant married Lola Taylor in 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Grant was very talented playing the piano, pipe organ, French horn, and mandolin.  He had many opportunities to use his talents throughout his life.  After his mission Grant was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean conflict, where he served for two years.  He was an excellent pianist and had marvelous typing skills, typing 81 words per minute on those ancient Royal typewriters.  This kept him stateside at Fort Ord, California during his military enlistment.   He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Utah.  He was hired by Morton Thiokol while they were contracted with the government making rocket motors for NASA Saturn missiles.

The family made their first permanent home in Brigham City, Utah.  When the company lost their contract six years later there were many lay-offs.   He found work in Southern California at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, where he worked for 27 years until his retirement in 1994.  Upon Grant’s retirement, he and Lola traveled the world.    Even up until his passing, Dad would say “Been there, done that and brought home the T-shirt.”  He has been a faithful member of his church all of his life, he served as ward clerk in every ward that he was in beginning during his military service, ward and stake organist, choir member, High Priest group leader, but his favorite work was with Lola as a temple worker for nearly 10 years at the Los Angeles temple.

He loved to share his baritone voice, singing in stake and ward choirs.  Now he will be joining those heavenly choirs singing praises to God and his Son.   He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years Lola Taylor Sheffield, his 4 children Vicki (Gary Tibbitts) Orem, Utah, Debbie Davis, Riverside California, Sherrie Sheffield, Vidor Texas and Jared (Wendi) Sheffield, Spanish Fork, Utah, 11 Grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 brothers George and Blair Sheffield.  Grant was preceded in death by his brothers Dean and Larry Sheffield, Alicia Sheffield, daughter-in-law, grandson Brad Tibbitts, and grandson-in-law Ryan Soper.

The family thanks all of those from Encompass Hospice, friends and neighbors that rendered aid during the final months of life.
