Carol LaVon Grass Winkler, 86, of Payson, UT, died Saturday, September 7, 2019, in Springville, UT. She was born June 9, 1933, in Salt Lake City, UT, the third of three children born to Harry Grass and Clara Ferrell Egbert. She married Keith Gardner Winkler on March 23, 1955, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on October 15, 2013.
Both of her older siblings, Ferrell Vyonne “Vicki” and Harry Vernon “Bus” preceded her in death, while she is survived by two half siblings from her father’s second marriage to Nan Hermese Osmond; Harriet I. (Howard, dec.) Southerland, and Mahlon O. Grass.
After her mother married Arthur Hughes, the barber, they relocated to Sandy, UT, where Carol was raised. She attended Jordan High School, and graduated from the University of Utah in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree and an Elementary School Teacher’s Diploma. Prior to her marriage, she taught school on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Toadlena, NM.
Subsequently, Carol has made her home in Staten Island, NY; San Juan, PR; Seattle, WA; Highland, MD; and several locations along the Wasatch Front, including Provo, Spanish Fork, and Payson, UT. In addition to a busy life raising her family, she fit in a wealth of community service and a multitude of church callings. Two areas of special significance in her life revolve around her love of music and a lifetime of devotion to family history and genealogy. She served two full-time Family History missions in her senior years.
Carol is survived by her seven children: Benjamin K. (Beth) Winkler, Marti Santizo, Andrew M. Winkler, Matthew G. Winkler, Betsy (Nate) Johansen, Naomi (Kevin) Yocum, and Iralee (Marden) Pace; as well as other loved ones; Renee Winkler, Rita Bradley, Pamela Grass, and all those who helped nurture her 32 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Carol dearly loved her many nieces and nephews.
