Betty Hill

Betty Jane Carr Hill, of Kendall, FL and Orem, UT, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021. She was born in Myers, Thompkins County, New York on February 7, 1930 to Martha Leona Reese and Leo Dudley Carr. She was married from 1950 to 1977 to Swanee Hill. He preceded her in death in 2011 as did one son, Jeffrey Earnest Hill. She is survived by sons, Stephen Thomas Hill (Hollywood, FL), Michael Edward Hill (Miami, FL), Albert Eugene Hill (Kendall, FL), a daughter, Jessica Ann Hill (McArthur) of Orem, UT, and 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Betty was no stranger to work and service, being employed nearly all her life to support her family. She retired from The Surrogate’s Court, Nassau County, Mineola, NY. After retirement, Betty[DMc1]  indulged her entrepreneurial talents by starting and operating a crafts business for over a year with a friend, Judy Hayman, and logged more than 2000 hours of volunteer service at Kendall’s Baptist Hospital.

Music was an ever-present thread that wound its way through her life. She played the saxophone in high school, the piano and later, the organ and the recorder. Additionally, she was a skilled singer, performing with the Armond Sodero Chorale (of Baldwin, NY), the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami (under the direction of Robert Gower), the Coral Gables Music Club, and Miami-Dade Community College Choir (under the direction of Eugene Greco) performing throughout the Eastern US. She was a long-time organist and Music Director for the Killian Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Combined with her service through music is service through organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution, (Coral Gables Chapter), where she served as Chair of the National Defense and ROTC Medals Committees. Additionally, she served as a member of the Coral Gables Women’s Club (Coco Plum).

Self-improvement and education were themes throughout her life. At the age of 80 she completed BYU’s Adult High School Diploma program and was named by BYU Independent Study as their 2010 delegate to the Outstanding Graduates of the Distance Education and Training Council (Wash., D.C.). with her encouragement all her living children earned college degrees. She was a remarkable woman, a great mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to so many people.
