Arlo J. Nelson, 96, passed away peacefully at home on 3 July 2024. Born 20 February 1928 in Leamington, Utah, to Lawrence Jay Nelson and Laura Loretta Bowman. He and his wife Ann were life-long residents of Utah, living in Orem for the past 65 years.
Arlo graduated from Delta High School and LDS Seminary and received an Associates Degree from Dixie College. He served an LDS mission to the Northwestern States Mission. Arlo also graduated from BYU in Botany and Zoology with a teaching certificate. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life.
He married Anna Louise Trotter on March 29, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.
Arlo worked as a youth on the MacIntyre Ranch in Leamington, Utah, then for the Union Pacific Railroad with his father and later for the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. After moving to Orem, he worked at Geneva Steel for 30 years. When Geneva closed, he then worked for Mannesman Steel for 5 years until his retirement. He and his wife served in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple for 10 years.
Arlo and Ann loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and 14 European and 3 Scandinavian countries. He loved to paint in oils and later in watercolors, tool leather, making wallets and purses; golf; collect stamps and coins; and bird watching, his bird book and binoculars always came with the family on vacations.
Arlo is survived by his sweetheart Ann, sister Janet Lang and Children: David (Kary) Nelson and BJ (Donna) Nelson. He was the proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Gard (Lindsay) Nelson, Brynna (Taylor Smith) Nelson, and Annika Nelson, Jamis (Laurie) Nelson, Jessica (Derek) Taylor, Ethan (Trina) Nelson, and Rachel (Chris) Eldard, and seventeen great-grandchildren: Wynn, Leigh and Jay Nelson; Thea Nelson Smith; Lyra Nelson; Taese and Davis Ita; Kingston Rains; Burke, Kasen, Delaney, and Boden Taylor; Harry Izzi; Max and Eddy Nelson; and Paisley and Holden Eldard.
Arlo is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Laura Nelson, sisters Glenna Nelson and Carrol Dutson and grandson Hayd Nelson.
A viewing will be held at the Wheeler-Sundberg Mortuary, 493 South State Orem, Utah, July 8, 2024, from 11:00 – 12:30. There will be a short program starting at 11:45 a.m. He will be interred at the Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East Orem, Utah and a graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm.
A family luncheon will be held in the Aspen 8th Ward in Orem after the interment at 1485 North 800 West Orem, Utah.
