Alan Hopwood Grey was reunited with the love of his life Patricia Ann Barney on January 20, 2018. He passed away from complications related to the flu at the age of 85 with his family by his side.
Alan was born to Arthur Philip Grey and Edith Dorothy Eve Grey on October 8, 1932, in Auckland, New Zealand. Alan was educated at local primary schools, Auckland Grammar School, Auckland Teachers College, received his BA in Geography from Brigham Young University, achieving the academic honor of Valedictorian, and went on to receive his MA and Ph.D. at The University of Wisconsin. He taught geography at Brigham Young University from 1964 until 1997, retiring as Professor.
He came to the United States in August 1956 to continue his education but was led to that which was far more valuable eternally—his wife. He was blessed to meet Patricia the first week he arrived in the United States. They were married September 27, 1957, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. What a team! She was a companion without peer. They eventually became the parents of Anthony Alan (Kara) Grey and Eve Grey (Brian) York and now have eight splendid grandchildren Kevin (Heather), Justin (Lisa), Jordan, Rain, Lindsay, Lauren, Parker, and Zachary; and two great grandchildren Drake and Noah. Alan shares a special bond with his brother Rex Grey, and his nephew Alan Robert Grey, who visited often from New Zealand. To his great sorrow, Patricia preceded him in death on October 28, 2000.
He loved most classical music (except opera and “that atonal muck”), photography, travel, and reading. He traveled with Pat to New Zealand, Britain and Europe, Canada, Australia, and much of the United States.
Alan loves the Lord Jesus Christ and rejoices in a glad a joyous reunion with Patricia.
